The Human Body CalmWear

March 25, 2018

The human body is an incredible work of science. Our bodies are constantly at work using numerous different systems to function at optimal levels every moment of every day. For the most part, we don't even have to think about how our bodies are working, they just do.

There are hundreds of trillions of cells in our body that function mechanically, physically, biochemically and produce bioelectricity. There are dozens of interacting systems and organs.

The average adult takes twenty thousand breaths a day. The kidneys process up to two hundred quarts of blood each day and filters out two quarts of waste. Our bodies distribute oxygen over a thousand miles of airways, while our brains alone consists of over 100 billion nerve cells. Our bodies function without being plugged in, without an external energy source, and does a mountain of work every single day.

The human body has an incredible ability to heal. We have built-in systems that look after cuts, infections, viruses, and a host of other invaders that our bodies are exposed to throughout the day. We can digest food, breathe, make blood, and produce waste, life-saving chemicals, and warnings if our systems are needing a little rest.

We have a natural circadian rhythm that helps us sleep, and have cells in our skin that will help us know if we are in danger or had an immune response to something in our environment. We can absorb medication and vitamins through our skin. We can see, feel, taste, touch and hear a wide range of amazing things that not every other species is privileged to know.

The human body feels emotions that not only help us respond to situations where we might be in danger, but to help us find joy, feel love, and know when we don't like something. Our bodies have built-in sensors that tell us if something is healthy to ingest, if our skin is itchy, or if we are thirsty or hungry.

The human body was created to be efficient, and to take care of itself without us ever knowing how it works, or why it works exactly as it does. We just know it works, we trust it, and we listen so we can take the very best care of our bodies to ensure it keeps working in perfect order. Absolutely amazing!!

The Human Body with Autism Spectrum Disorder

When we have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, we know that our bodies will work differently. Differently, not incorrectly. Some of the things we take for granted as neurotypical individuals simply aren't the same for people living with Autism, but they aren't wrong. The human body, as mentioned, knows precisely what to do in almost all circumstances, even in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

ASD is not a disease, there is nothing wrong with a person who has Autism, they are amazing individuals. People with Autism interpret the world differently than people that are considered neurotypical and that should be celebrated.

These differences make it so their bodies are almost superhuman. Their senses are heightened more than a typical body. People with Autism may have a heightened sense of smell, or their sense of taste might be stronger than a typical human body. Because of this, their senses appear to be on overload all the time, which can make it very difficult for them to be in an environment that is loaded full of any type of stimulation. Again, this is simply different, not wrong.

In a typical human body, all these systems run smoothly together, and function as a whole with the ability to filter out information our bodies don't need so we can focus better throughout the day, whether that's getting to work, eating, taking a rest, or reading a favorite book.

When a person with Autism Spectrum Disorder heads out into the world,  their senses are so incredibly strong, which can mean that even the simplest difference in their day can cause all those incredible nerve cells to go into fight or flight mode. The fight or flight response is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to their environment.

Because the senses are almost like superpowers, the danger flag goes off often in a person living with ASD. This means their tolerance for an overstimulating environment is not the same. Their bodies are doing the exact same job as a typical human body, but they are doing it more often because of their heightened senses. Their body is not making mistakes, it is simply reacting to what the senses are filtering into the brain, and responding accordingly. This is exactly what it's supposed to be doing!!

Here's the problem, our systems have been developed around very neurotypical responses, including our education system, healthcare, and social groupings such as sport and leisure. When these systems were built, they were built to fit a certain criteria, one that fits in with the norms of society.

Our systems weren't made for people with super sensory powers. This makes it appear as though people with Autism Spectrum Disorder aren't responding to their environment correctly, it's often the opposite. Their bodies are doing exactly what the human body was intended to do which is to make sure that they are safe.

Because of the superpower sensory systems, people with Autism Spectrum Disorder will need a little help to feel safe in their environment until they learn coping mechanisms that fit within societal norms. Simply put, their bodies need to learn how to adapt differently than a typical body does.

How can CalmWear help?

CalmWear was specifically designed for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, by a very caring and concerned mother that couldn't find an alternative solution to help her son. After months of research and collaboration with a team of Occupational Therapists and Scientists and other healthcare professionals, CalmWear was created.

CalmWear is based on Deep Pressure Therapy. When we have an overactive sensory system, one proven method to help calm and soothe the sensory system is deep pressure. We can achieve this through massage or weighted blankets, but those are used only in the moment, not as a therapy that has lasting results.

CalmWear was designed to be worn 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so that a person's system can regulate and their sensory system can stay calm, allowing them to be able to focus on learning, walking, talking and all the important tasks at hand, rather than focusing on their sensory needs.

CalmWear has been proven to help reduce or eliminate meltdowns, help with sleep, regulate the wearer, calm the sensory system and help with proprioceptive feedback. CalmWear gives the perfect amount of deep pressure compression therapy to the wearer so that the body can focus on doing all the other work it has to do, without having to deal with the sensory needs. When this happens, the body won't go into fight or flight mode unless necessary, and an Autistic person will be able to function much better because their sensory system will not be overreacting.

CalmWear is a breathable, lightweight, durable, wearable therapy, compression garment that is designed to ensure success for people with different sensory needs. Once the system is calm and relaxed, we notice that the beautiful human body gets to do exactly what it was intended to do, without all the extra sensory work. Perfect!

SIZING CHARTS

We have already allowed for the correct amount of gentle sensory compression, so please use the exact chest measurement when deciding on size.

If your measurement is between two sizes, you are best choosing the smaller size. CalmWear needs to provide gentle sensory compression to the muscles, to work effectively.
