CalmWear vs. Weighted Blankets

March 25, 2018

Weighted blankets are often used for children and adults with sensory issues such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety and other neurological conditions.

Weighted blankets are made from quilted layers of metal or plastic beads sewn into a blanket. The weight of a blanket, to meet sensory demands, need to be approximately 10% of a person's body weight.

They are based on the idea of Deep Pressure Therapy, which when used will help calm the nervous system and soothe a person who is using the blanket. They are used for children in the school system as well as adults at work, on vacations, and to assist with sleep.

The weight of the blankets is designed to apply deep pressure for a person to feel safe and comfortable, to soothe and calm anxiety, and help with sleep. Weighted blankets can be an excellent therapy tool, but there are a few drawbacks.

As accepting as we are as a community, when venturing out with a weighted blanket, people may notice that it's a therapy tool which could cause embarrassment, especially in older children or teenagers. Weighted blankets are large, especially if they are being used for an older child and the bulk of them alone can be uncomfortable.

Weighted blankets are expensive and can only be used for a certain amount of time each day before we become desensitized and our bodies build a resistance to the calming effects of the blankets. If using a weighted blanket for sleep, the blanket can easily fall off during the night due to our regular sleep movements.

Weighted blankets are fantastic in small spurts, but not so much as a regular all day therapy.

An alternative choice to weighted blankets

CalmWear was designed by a mom, along with a team of specialists, for her child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. CalmWear is also based on the idea of Deep Pressure Therapy and is designed to help calm the sensory system so anyone wearing it can focus listen and learn, rather than focusing on an overwhelmed sensory system.

CalmWear is wearable, breathable, compression therapy that can be worn all day, every day to keep the entire system soothed 24 hours a day!

CalmWear is made from a scientifically designed sensory fabric called Calmtex. When CalmWear was being developed, the creator knew she had to keep a few things in mind when dealing with people that have sensory processing issues. The vests she created had to be durable, washable, and comfortable and suitable to wear under clothing all year round.

CalmWear is not only durable, but moisture absorbing, seamless, and without tags to ensure any sensitivities to tactile issues are addressed.

CalmWear is a 24/7, 365 days a year wearable therapy solution that provides the exact amount of sensory based compression therapy throughout the entire day. CalmWear has a specific sizing chart that will help make sure each person wearing it gets the perfect amount of sensory input.

CalmWear has been proven to minimize meltdowns, enhance sleep, calm the sensory system, help with proprioceptive feedback and improve body awareness. Read the reviews from therapists and parents on how CalmWear has changed the lives of not only their child but also their entire family.

Some people with sensory issues don't have a great sense of their surroundings or how their bodies relate to those surroundings. CalmWear helps with coordination and body awareness, which in turn helps with feeding, toilet training, activities, schooling and social situations.

The entire CalmWear range can be worn underneath regular clothing, making this wearable therapy discreet, assisting the wearer to feel confident when out in their community. How amazing is it that every individual can now feel anxiety free, capable and strong, without the feeling of being looked at differently!

This revolutionary wearable therapy is changing the lives of people all over the world. CalmWear is an excellent alternative to weighted blankets for anyone struggling with sensory issues.
